| Comments | A poetry review by David Fraser
In “To the People of the Carnegie Kitchen” Richard Tylman writes about places of the heart, of spirit, compassion and empathy. The Carnegie Building on the East Side of Vancouver houses its kitchen, the only relief service in the city of its kind, a refuge from a world harsher and less benevolent than most Canadians have ever experienced. Once a library built on Andrew Carnegie's donation, then a museum, the Carnegie kitchen is now a place of and for the people. |

“ na ból istnienia wdychamy poezję...” Cytując innego poetę, tak sobie myślę, gdy czytam Twoje wiersze, Ryszardzie. Wędrujesz przez życie, jakbyś jechał pociągiem i mijał wydarzenia, które opisujesz, analizujesz i przeżywasz. Zapis przepiękny i przejmujący. Joanna |

| Comments | I imagine Richard sitting at his kitchen table on the verge of striking out his
“Ode to Whales”. Without any historical claim to such an act within his own Polish heritage, he picks up his pencil — the next best thing to a harpoon — and forges through white-capped waves of collective memory. What he captures is his own stream-of-consciousness; playful and sombre, lolling and direct, cynical and political. — A sensual journey, part educational documentary, part social commentary. The imagery awakens my own in lines like “Water's breaking. Ocean's pink with blood like a lipsticked kiss.” I tune into scenes I once saw of a beluga's birth on TV. Continuing on, my wet suit intact, I feel the spray of humour in combinations of lines such as “male whale heart throbs” and “… gorging on milk as rich as a double quarter-pounder burger served with nuggets dipped in mayonnaise …” Listen to the lyrical sense. “Fat fiddling, weight hauling; flotilla of floats afloat” or “herring casserole rolling along the tidal belt of rocking kelp” and, splash, moving more quickly just beneath the ocean's surface you're tuned in to the complementary rhythms of a pod. Are there really that many types of whales? “Beaked” and “Bottle-nosed”, “small toothed” and “Sei”? Note to self. Look those up! Note to readers. Stand up and read this poem aloud, like a captain shouting out in a storm. Enunciate every word. Feel the fullness of the effect. “Fish-net stockings — fit for their own early funeral, fishermen style.” Bounce along the depth and meanings that as readers we're undoubtedly missing, and descend toward the emotional heaviness of the ending, an ode to present day imperialistic paranoia parallelling ecological terrorism. “That must be the military blasting away at illegal aliens floating toward the shore of an all-American dreamscape.” Gayle Mavor |

The Definitive Word on Human Sexuality from a Respectful
Moderate. Openness in the dialogue about sex has come a long way since I was young. Richard has a history of poking fun at the conventions of sex-play and he seems intent on extending the limits his readers can reach. He does this with humour, compassion, and just a bit of bravado of his own. For myself, after the first shock, I find his candor delightly informative. In a time when both men and women spout claims of sexual prowess, Richard acknowledges the fresh challenges all lovers encounter, first time around. Ruth McLeod |

Three Point One million, eh? Pretty soon we'll have to
buy a license to write poetry . . . after all the Big Boys have to figure out
how to profit from this trend. Cheers and thanks for all your help, Csaba |

| Comments | Hi Richard (this message is more a response to a conversation we started while I was buying your book). I enjoyed your reading at the Library and loved the concept of the imaginary lover aging. You talked to me a bit about exploring the Canadian Soul through Native Spirituality. I believe Canadians (aboriginal to newcomers) eventually find truth and wholeness in the distance and space given by this land. I have talked to street people from Vancouver to Montreal who tell me about the land they come from; the nature of animals and earth is a memory held deep within. I have a native foster brother who lives on the streets of Vancouver (or in its jails and emergency or psych wards) and every time he phones me, he asks if I planted potatoes this year or if mom still has sweet-peas along the fence and how high did they grow this year or, is the snow weighing the branches of the Saskatoon bushes?) ~in this spirit here is a small poem from a second generation Canadian who grew up in Saskatchewan and Northern BC and has lived on both sides of the country~ My mother is a new ploughed
field But I am the wind blowing Hope to hear you read
again. |

| Comments | Richard, You did a great job. I think it is very well done. The poetry comes across, is easy to read and looks very nice. I will be looking forward to seeing your paintings. Some other poetry web sites are hard to read. I found your layout very restful for the eyes. I like the backgroud color - makes it easier to read. That is important since time can then be spent enjoying the poetry. We had around 5 phone calls about your radio program apperance and the poetry, all positive. Ariadne |
